Jellyfish have a “bell” and many tentacles that contain venom. The venom is contained in small “balls” called nematocysts, so named because when they come into contact with the skin, the cysts burst and release the venom, which contains a toxin. For this reason, you should not rub the affected area, as this may rupture the cysts and cause more pain. First, rinse with seawater, never with fresh water. For the purple jellyfish, apply a mixture of seawater and baking soda (in a 1:1 ratio) for 5 minutes; after doing this, rinse only with seawater or remove the residue with a plastic card. Next, apply ice every 15 minutes, along with a cortisone cream and an antihistamine; I would also recommend taking a pain reliever.
