A genital yeast infection is an infection caused by an overgrowth of fungi, usually Candida albicans, in the vagina, on the penis, or in the wider genital area. It is a common and often bothersome infection that can affect both women and men, although it occurs more frequently in women.
Causes:
A yeast infection usually occurs when the balance of bacteria and fungi that normally live in the genital area is disrupted. Factors that can contribute to the development of a yeast infection include:
– Excessive moisture or heat.
– Use of antibiotics, which can destroy good bacteria.
– Hormonal changes (such as during pregnancy).
– A weakened immune system.
– Poor hygiene or the use of scented products in the sensitive area.
Symptoms:
– In women: Severe itching, burning, white discharge, redness, and swelling.
– In men: Itching, irritation, red rashes, and pain during urination or sexual intercourse.
Treatment:
Fungal infections are usually treated with antifungal medications in the form of creams, ointments, or pills.
